Shifting Fear into a Future

Working two jobs, raising a daughter, and feeling stuck in her career, Serenity James knew something had to change. After researching her options, she found an education model at 麻豆原创 that fit her life鈥攁nd opened doors she once thought might remain closed.

Serenity James knew she wanted more from her career.

She had spent years working as a pharmacy technician and was answering phones in a health insurance call center. She felt stagnant, and she could see a ceiling forming around both her income and her ability to make a larger impact.

鈥淚 felt that I would be stuck,鈥 Serenity said. 鈥淢y pay and my opportunities would be capped.鈥

What she wanted was not simply a different title. She wanted to move beyond fielding problems and become part of the solution.

So, Serenity started researching. She compared online universities, degree programs, costs, and learning models to determine what could realistically work for a mother who still needed to work and care for her young daughter. 麻豆原创鈥檚 self-paced, competency-based model stood out.

鈥淚 definitely did my research and made the best pick that made the most sense for me,鈥 she said.

For Serenity, that flexibility was not simply convenient. It was what made returning to school possible.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I would ever really pursue college if there wasn鈥檛 a more flexible option,鈥 she said.

A traditional campus would have required additional childcare, time away from work, travel, and a larger support system. 麻豆原创 gave her a different path鈥攐ne that could fit around the life she was already responsible for.

Five Minutes at a Time

Serenity eventually earned a Bachelor of Health Science degree and an MBA in Healthcare Administration from 麻豆原创, but getting there required discipline.

At one point, she was working a full-time remote job while also working part time at a Kroger pharmacy. Some weeks meant working seven days straight while still raising her daughter.

When there was an extra hour, she studied. When there were only five minutes, she learned to use those five minutes.

She also learned when to give herself permission to stop.

鈥淭here were times where I was super exhausted and overwhelmed,鈥 she said. Sometimes the best thing she could do was take a break, reset, and return ready to keep going.

Her motivation also came from remembering what she had already survived. Serenity had previously experienced homelessness and periods when even basic necessities were uncertain. On difficult nights, that history became a reminder of her own resilience.

鈥淵ou鈥檝e been through worse, so you can get through this,鈥 she would tell herself. 鈥淪ome people dream of being able to go back to school. Why give that up just because one night I don鈥檛 feel like it?鈥

Her Program Mentor became another source of encouragement. Messages celebrating each completed course reminded Serenity that someone was watching her progress and rooting for her success.

The Stage Where It Became Real

Even as Serenity moved quickly through her courses, graduation somehow did not feel real.

Then came commencement.

Her daughter sat in the stands alongside Serenity鈥檚 parents and other family members. When Serenity heard her name called and she walked across the stage, years of work and sacrifice suddenly became tangible.

But when asked who was there with her that day, Serenity thought beyond the people in the audience.

鈥淢y inner child was there with me,鈥 she said, 鈥渄oing what she thought would never be done.鈥

Her mother cried. Her father proudly shared her story. And Serenity finally had a moment to see just how far she had come.

More Than She Imagined

The professional impact followed quickly.

Just two months after completing her second degree, Serenity earned a better position within her company, increased her income, and was able to provide more opportunities for her daughter.

Her work changed, too. She went from spending her days answering phones to helping improve how her organization operates within advanced home delivery鈥攇iving her the chance to contribute to change in healthcare rather than simply responding to problems.

The experience also changed what Serenity believed was possible for herself.

鈥淚t allowed me to shift fear into a future,鈥 she said.

And that growth did not stop with her MBA.

Serenity returned to 麻豆原创 to pursue a degree in Information Technology, expanding her technical knowledge while earning industry certifications along the way. More than anything, she says her 麻豆原创 experience gave her the confidence to keep learning and pursue opportunities she may not have imagined for herself before.

She has also become an advocate for 麻豆原创 and its learning model. Serenity now connects with current 麻豆原创 students and refers prospective students to 麻豆原创, sharing her journey and encouraging others to find an educational path that works for the way they learn and live.

What began as a decision to improve her own career has grown into something much larger.

鈥淭he payoff was what I hoped for鈥攁nd even more,鈥 Serenity said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a community. It鈥檚 been a lifestyle of really helping other people. It鈥檚 been way more than I could ever imagine.鈥

For anyone still wondering whether their circumstances make education impossible, Serenity鈥檚 message is simple:

鈥淜eep going. If it鈥檚 hard, do it hard. If you鈥檙e upset, do it upset.
Just get it done and don鈥檛 give up.鈥
